Buganda Kingdom to Mark 32 Years of Kabaka Mutebi’s Reign at Kibuli Mosque
Kampala, Uganda — On July 31, 2025, the Kingdom of Buganda will commemorate 32 years since the coronation of His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, with this year’s celebration scheduled to take place at Kibuli Mosque in Kampala.
The Kabaka was officially crowned on July 31, 1993, at the historic grounds of Naggalabi Buddo, becoming the 36th Kabaka of Buganda and the first to be crowned since the restoration of traditional kingdoms in Uganda. This moment marked the revival of one of Africa’s oldest and most influential monarchies after decades of abolition by Obote government.
Since his coronation, Kabaka Mutebi II has led Buganda through a period of cultural revival, youth empowerment, economic partnerships, and the strengthening of Buganda’s institutions such as the Lukiiko (parliament), Buganda Land Board, and numerous health and education initiatives. His reign has been defined by the promotion of unity, dignity, and service to the people, both within Buganda and nationally, Omulelmbe Omutebi
To honor this journey, the Kingdom holds annual coronation anniversary celebrations in different counties, known as Masaza, allowing communities across Buganda to participate in this shared heritage.
