The Ugandan music fraternity is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of gospel singer Daudi Mugema, who was found lifeless in a hotel room in Gulu on the morning of June 24, 2025. The news sent shockwaves across the country, with fans, fellow artists, and religious leaders expressing disbelief and sorrow over the loss of a man whose voice had become a spiritual anchor for many.
Mugema, known for his deeply emotive songs like “Nze Nkwagala” and “Omukwano Gw’Omukama,” had traveled to Gulu for a gospel outreach concert. According to hotel staff, he had checked in the night before and was expected to perform at a local church event the following day. When he failed to appear for breakfast or respond to calls, hotel management entered his room and discovered his body. Authorities have launched an investigation, but early reports suggest no signs of foul play.
The 38-year-old singer had built a reputation not just as a performer, but as a minister of hope. His lyrics, often drawn from scripture and personal testimony, resonated with audiences across denominations. He was a regular feature on gospel radio stations and had recently launched a YouTube series titled “Worship Moments with Mugema,” where he shared acoustic worship sessions and reflections on faith.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the country. Fellow gospel artist Levixone posted, “We’ve lost a brother, a worshipper, a soul lifter. Rest well, Daudi.” Judith Babirye, another gospel icon, described him as “a gentle spirit with a powerful voice.” Even secular artists like Eddy Kenzo and Sheebah Karungi took to social media to honor his contribution to Uganda’s music culture.
